August 8, 2021 - Essex pilots fly to Blairstown Airport, New Jersey

Yesterday, the plan was to go to airport restaurant at Blairstown Airport (1N7), way up in New Jersey, west of New York City.   But I talked them into going to the monthly fly-in lunch at Sunbury Airport  -- the wide grass strip on an island in the Susquehanna River, north of Harrisburg.  We ended up going to neither as the forecast was bad.  It turns out we could have gone to either as the forecastred bad weather never materialized.  But Chuck B. and I did a short fun fly, and we ended up putting in three hours of good work on the RV10 so it was a good day.

The weather was better today so we did go to Blairstown Airport.  It was Chuck (RV-7A), Mark (RV-8), Ron (C-150) and myself.  Mark got some good close formation practice the flight up and back.

Here I am on a left upwind for runway 7 at Blairstown Airport.

A closer look at Blairstown's glider operation, which is considerable.

We -- the three RVs -- were on the downwind leg in a column when the glider towplane came out of nowhere and descended into the pattern ahead of us.  No problem, we just extended the downwind a little.

The three RVs parked on the grass.  Ron in the C-150 won't be here for awhile but not as long as you would think.

I thought I had never landed at this airport before.  But it looked very familiar; I think I did a touch and go once here in the Citabria.

Donna's was small inside but most people were sitting outside underneath the big, shady trees enjoying the beautiful day.

The restaurant occupies half the building; the FBO -- which was closed today -- the other half of the building.

The restaurant was small and as you can see, a lot of people were here for breakfast.  The restaurant staff was really working hard and kept everyone happy.

We talked with the owner/builder/pilot of that nice-looking RV-14 at center.  I think he was based in New York.

The food at Donna's Runway Cafe was excellent.

Looking out over the glider area.

A Stearman and PT-19 taxiied in together.

There's the PT-19.

Heading home, Chuck moves up to take the lead.

Chuck is in the lead with Mark on the right and me on the left.

Nice flight today.  Discovered a new airport restaurant and had some fun flying.
